Rotator Cuff Surgery & Rehab ❤️‍🩹 - Tip One : Gua Sha Technique
I will discuss a technique that I have found helpful called Gua Sha, also called scraping, to alleviate musculoskeletal issues. It possibly breaks down scar tissue or tense muscle tissue after rotator cuff surgery and rehab by creating petechia and ecchymoses in order to bring blood supply to the area that is an issue. The goal of this is to increase range of motion and relieve chronic pain. See the link below for an scientific article I found on Gua Sha or Scraping.
Here are the procedures I had done on my left and right rotator cuff and bicep.
1. Shoulder, diagnostic arthroscopy
2. Shoulder arthroscopic supraspinatus rotator cuff repair
3. Shoulder arthroscopic biceps tenodesis
4. Shoulde...

Do you have any restrictions, are you in the gym, can you lift weights? I am in the gym 4-5 days a week lifting weights and just want to see how you are going with gym since surgery. Thanks

    Hi Anne! I’m happy for you. What a journey! Have you got 100% range of motion and strength back?Thanks for sharing the Guasha treatment. I found it very effective as well. I also had running fire cupping done as well. It’s painful but helps. I’m at 8 and half months post op. I had frozen shoulder after surgery, so the surgeon had to do manipulation after anesthesia at 4 and half months post op. I had been making great progress since the second surgery. How much weight can you lift at 8 or 9 months post op? I was doing way better and way more of myself until I did something stupid. I lifted and moved a bike rack( about 25 pounds) with both arms from the garage to the car trunk and pushed with my right arm ( surgery shoulder side) and I had been experiencing pain and soreness for almost a week. I still went biking for 65K in the mountains that day and did a big hike yesterday. I thought I would be better by now, but I’m still in pain. 😭 I’m so worried that I might have retorn the tendon. My surgeon is away so I’ll have to see another doctor next week. I’m so worried and really hope that I didn’t retear the tendon. Could you please give me some insight? Thank you! Kayla

      I have had similar issues and usually it’s just I pushed it too far. In a week my ROM is fine and sometimes weirdly better. Kinda like ai had scar tissue I broke through by over doing it at these later months. At a year I still don’t have my shoulder ROM matching. Very close. But I am very flexible so my goals are high. Hi Anne, I'm super thankful I found your postings. I'm probably heading toward RC surgery this summer after an MRI showed a 1.5-2 cm full thickness tear & SLAP. By nature, I'm a very upbeat, let's-do-what-you-gotta-do type personality, but this has really has thrown me for a loop. I've had breast reconstruction, 2 hip total replacments, broken wrist in 5 places, emergency finger surgery (during Covid, ugh) bc I severed a tendon, nerve and artery, I'm trying not to get nervous/anxious at the thought of the lengthy and involved rehab that shoulder surgery seems to require. I've been reading quite a bit about Gua Sha and dry needling. My question is, do you perform the Gua Sha on your own, outside of your PT sessions? And was there any point during your PT sessions where you felt the excercises were doing more harm than good? If so, how did you adjust? Thank you and I swear I will have to watch your videos everyday during reovery to keep my spirits up.

    • @AnneSchmidt
      @AnneSchmidt 11 дней назад

      My physical therapist does the Gua Sha technique. You can do that technique on yourself, but I would say because this is going to be on your back and your shoulder region, it would be very hard to do yourself. Some weeks at physical therapy I didn’t make progress like I wanted to, but I always had improvement every few weeks and major gains each month with physical therapy. I am still going to physical therapy once a week to get full range of motion back on my right shoulder. I have better range of motion than most people and we’re trying to match my left shoulder that was worked on two years ago. That way, I have symmetrical shoulders. I’ve started weightlifting and I need to be able to handle that same weight on both sides. Thank you for reaching out and feel free to ask anything else related to surgery, recovery, and rehabilitation from rotator cuff surgery, SLAP tears, and bicep tenodesis. My physical therapist did do dry needling on me and we did find that helpful. However, once my scar tissue or pains were located near the lungs and we weren’t seeing the benefits as much as we’d like, we switched to the Gua Sha technique. Also, you will need to have an upbeat positive mental attitude. It is absolutely imperative to have a full recovery from the surgery.

    • @AnneSchmidt
      @AnneSchmidt Месяц назад

      With rehabilitation and dedication to your physical therapy, at a year, you should be able to lift close to that amount of weight if everything goes as planned. It also depends on your physical fitness beforehand. Usually the stronger and in better shape you go into surgery, the better your rehab goes. I would say it doesn’t hurt to look for other types of work that may not involve that amount of lifting repetitively. You should be fully healed at a year, but will definitely not be as strong as you were before surgery. It takes up to two full years to get back to your full strength by doing some weightlifting and strengthening. As well as lots of stretching!

I’m super disciplined and do about 3 hrs PT 7 days a week but I’m technically 2 weeks behind where I should be. Just hit 12 weeks. Struggling with range of motion. And I work so hard every day. Just had dry needling over the weekend and it helped big time. Not sure if I need to find a new PT.

      I was extremely shocked the first time when I had my left shoulder worked on about two years ago, how difficult of a journey this really was. So when I had to have my right shoulder completely fix the same way I knew I was in for another long year. I will say that both shoulders had the exact same thing done, but did not respond to physical therapy the same way. I had the exact same surgeon and the exact same physical therapist. Keep doing what you’re doing and attempt different techniques. Such as the dry needling and maybe this Gua Sha technique. Sometimes the recovery is just different, and that’s just the way it is. I found that was absolutely true with my left arm versus my right arm. Keep me posted and best wishes. Stay positive, patient and persistent. It will pay off!

    I wondering you had a rotator cuff tear in your left shoulder and had a surgery after a year you had to do your right shoulder too what exactly happen to your right shoulder? Because I just had a surgery on my left shoulder I had a tear I’m so scared and worried it may happen to my right shoulder too please let me know do I need to discussion with my doctor or not thank you

      I ended up having back-to-back shoulder surgeries and rotator cuff rehabilitation as well as a bicep tenodesis because of wear and tear of being an athlete and other activities that I did to overuse my shoulders. I did a lot of painting, which is probably part to blame besides the athletic things. I had a lot of pain and the inability to sleep at night with both shoulders. I also had loss of range of motion. So when I had my second MRI that I had done the same thing to my right side as I did to my left. I would say if you’re suspicious, see your physical therapist and have them test your other shoulder.

      I agree! I had my suprasinatus tendon reattached as well as bicep tenodesis done now on both shoulders. The rehab and rehabilitation is a long difficult process. But as a fellow athlete, it’s what we have to do to get back to being athletic. Currently in month 11 after my right shoulder surgery and at PT doing dry needling as well as Gua sha to eliminate the last of the issues to get full ROM. Best wishes and keep staying positive, patient and persistent with your rehabilitation.

    Had right shoulder surgery 7 months ago. Had left shoulder surgery 3 weeks ago along with bicep repair with anchor. Right shoulder pain was off the charts for 7 weeks. Rehab was slow. Although range of motion is great, the arm remains weak. Left shoulder pain is minimal. I had to stop opioids on day 3 bc of bowels impaction. At the point I have had one Tylenol in the past 18 days after a rough pt. At this point my right shoulder actually has more achey pain than the occasional twinge on left shoulder. Both surgeries have been miserable but the bottom line is that every experience with rotator cuff surgery is different. I suffered a traumatic fall while visiting friends at air bnb Step down into sunken living room had no visual cues that there was a step. Slammed one shoulder into wall and fell onto other shoulder. Months of agony before imaging determined injuries. Resulting movement away from bone made matters worse. The experience is very personal. But it does and will get better. How much better is a combination of pt and surgery success and compliance. Having said that, a neighbor had surgery (36) and stoped wearing sling ama at day 4. He seems to be doing really well at week 12. At week 7 on right shoulder I was still wearing sling and bolster at least half the day on drs advice. Left shoulder am just wearing sling no bolster at week 2 on drs advice. So hang in there. This too shall pass. Glad you are doing well.

      You and I are in a small group to have back to back shoulder surgeries! It’s an ordeal for sure and both are so difficult as well as different. My right was way more challenging than my left. And my left was still very challenging! PT is an absolute must and I’m finally back to weightlifting at half strength now. I’m in month 11 soon and starting to feel stronger. It was a LONG process needing patience, perseverance and persistence. Lot of lows, but finally I’m in the upwards trajectory. I too couldn’t take the opioid meds. First time around I lasted two or three days. This last time I had one dose and stopped bc I had itching and threw up. Not fun 20 hrs after surgery. Best wishes and keep me updated on your progress. Keep smiling and stay positive.

      @@AnneSchmidt Hi Anne. At almost three months for left shoulder. It is doing really well. Sometimes a little weak and stiff but so much better than right shoulder which is at 9 months or so. Both are so much better than before the injury but not anywhere near pre-injury. I am doing rom in the pool everyday and that is helping. It really is all about movement and pt. I hope you are doing well. It is a journey for sure

      Great to hear the update! Day by day, week by week, month by month, and I’m finding year by year. I predict it will take me three years to get fully back to ROM, strength and endurance in my athletic abilities. But I’m so glad I had both shoulders done NOW, but a year ago I would NOT have said that. Best wishes and here if you have any questions!

    You are right on. I’m dealing with depression realizing that I’m stuck in this sling for at least another four weeks and who knows after that. I think I underestimated how tough this would be.

    • @AnneSchmidt
      @AnneSchmidt 3 месяца назад

      The depression that can be caused by this surgery, rehabilitation and recovery ❤️‍🩹 is more common than most would think. Becoming completely helpless literally “overnight” as well as not being able to drive, besides all the pain and sleep deprivation, is extremely challenging and hard for anyone else to understand that hasn’t gone through this. Just know, I totally understand how you feel and I promise it will get better in time. Take it day by day and week by week. I went through this two years in a row, because I had both my shoulders redone the same way. I’m in month 10 of my right shoulder rehabilitation. I underestimated how tough it would be my first time also (with my left shoulder), which is one of the reasons I made these videos. Best wishes and be patient with yourself.
